Weekend Wanderings

A few weekends ago, I headed home to celebrate my grandfather’s 90th birthday. That Thursday afternoon, a co-worker dropped me off at Union Station so I could take the train to the airport. In a time when so many cities are being forced to cut public transportation schedules and delaying necessary maintenance as a result of budget cuts, it’s exciting to see Denver increasing infrastructure, especially in the realm of public transportation. The “Train to the Plane” opened last year. It picks you up in downtown at Union Station and drops you off at the doors of the terminal. With a quick security line and carry-on only, Union Station to my gate took an hour and 10 minutes.
Once at my gate, I randomly ran into some friends on their way to New York. We grabbed some dinner and drinks at Root Down before going our separate ways. I got the Colombian Grilled Cheese which is corn cakes, mozzarella and poblano-pistachio pesto with achiote crema & jicama pico de gallo. It was so good!

All day Friday my parents and I prepped for my grandfather’s birthday party. Saturday morning we packed up the car with our precious cargo of food and the birthday cake and headed down to my grandparent’s to celebrate. For more on the birthday party, see last week’s Weekend Wanderings.

Sunday we enjoyed a traditional family bagel brunch. Growing up we almost always did bagels for lunch after church. My parents would invite new church members, friends and family to join us. The brunch includes fresh bagels, cream cheese, butter, cold cuts, lox, cucumbers, tomatoes, onions and capers. Everyone can put together their own creation. My favorite combo is an everything bagel with cream cheese, cucumbers and onions. Sometimes, I’ll change it up ever so slightly and add ham.

After brunch, my dad and I headed into Boston and played the tourist. We walked around Fanueil Hall and Quincy Market. We stopped to take pictures of the Old State House and we did something I’ve been wanting to do for years, we went to Paul Revere’s House! We wrapped up our afternoon with a stop at Caffe Vittoria in the North End for a cappuccino and a biscotti before I had to go to the airport. It was a whirlwind trip but it’s always fun to to be home.

Happy Wanderings!
